Contrast, not variety
Two typefaces are plenty. The pairing works when they differ clearly in purpose: something with character for headings, something quiet and well-proportioned for body copy.
Faces that sit close together in style are the real hazard. Two similar sans-serifs look like a mistake rather than a decision, because the reader cannot tell why the change happened.

Test headings at their real size. Display faces that look striking at 96px often fall apart at 24px, which is where most of them actually get used.
Set the body text first
Line length and line height do more for readability than the choice of face. Somewhere around 65 characters per line with generous leading, then pick a face that suits it.
